“I began writing about power because I had so little.”
Octavia E. Butler
Octavia Butler wrote the story of her success into her personal journals – before it happened. The Late novelist, author of Kindred, Parable of the Talents, Mind of My Mind, Clay’s Ark, and many others had a notebook from 1988, were she writes: “I shall be a bestselling writer…each of my books will be on the bestseller lists of LAT, NYT, PW, WP, etc. My novels will go onto above lists whether publishers push them hard or not.”
“I will find the way to do this. So be it! See to it!”
Octavia Butler’s conscience had no limits and no lack of power, because it wasn’t bound by time as we think we know it or the delusion of perfection as we often experience it. Her Afro-futurist foresight allowed the completion of the thought onto a page to be manifest in the moment as perfect. She went on to be a renowned novelist with awards and accolades including becoming the first science- fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant”, a Lifetime Achievement award, and induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Her Complete and Perfect affirmations became the foundation of her future.
