Our journey with the sun thus far has been devoted to honoring this potent source of nourishment, both the star that warms us and the light inside that keeps us shining bright. The Sun also offers lessons of independence, individuality, and autonomy.
Today is Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. For well over two centuries, and arguably even longer, slavery was legal and supported in the US. Although it was officially made illegal on June 19th, 1865, “slavery has been perpetuated in practices since the end of the American Civil War through such actions as criminalizing behavior and enabling police to arrest poor freedmen and force them to work for the state under convict leasing; suppression of African Americans by disenfranchisement, lynchings and Jim Crow; conservative Republicans declaring a war on drugs that weigh more heavily on minority communities and, by the late 20th century, mass incarceration of people of color in the United States;” as illustrated in the documentary “13th.”
How can you resource your brightness, clarity, independence, and individuality to shine light on ways in which you, other individuals, or groups of people are experiencing limitations in their freedom? How can you bring attention to an oppression that others might be ignorant of or ignoring, perhaps because the form(s) and system(s) of oppression are being intentionally hidden very well?
Where will you shine your light today in honor of all who fought and died for their own freedom and for the freedom of others? Share your focus here.
