Pliny the Elder from the 1st century BCE, tells us that at the beginning of the Cranes’ annual migration, they each swallow stones to avoid being swept off by the changing winds on their journey.
Once these Cranes land, they vomit up the stones because they no longer need the weight.
Many believe these stones to have special powers, and use them, post migration, to identify gold-bearing rocks.
