It is believed that cranes utilize stones as a form of a warning device as well. When they rest on the banks of the Nile, between migratory flights, one crane acts as a sentry.
This crane stands on one leg with a stone in the talons of the other leg, and watches for surprise attacks.
If the sentry bird starts to doze off, the stone slips from their grasp and falls to the ground, alerting them through the sound of the fallen stone and waking them up.
